Basketball Game Preview: Delta Charter Dragons vs. Vanguard College Prep Lions

The Delta Charter Dragons will challenge the Vanguard College Prep Lions at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Having struggled with nine defeats in a row dating back to last season, Delta Charter turned things around against Tioga on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Timberwolves as they made off with a 64-39 victory. The Dragons' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Delta Charter can attribute much of their success to Jayden Walker, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 boards, and Jaylen West, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten boards. With that strong performance, Walker is now averaging an impressive 9.5 rebounds per game. Dustin Sousa was another key player, putting up four points and seven rebounds.

Delta Charter was working as a unit and finished the game with 11 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2023.

Meanwhile, it was close, but on Thursday Vanguard College Prep sidestepped Stockton Christian for a 64-62 win.

Vanguard College Prep found their leader in sophomore Xavier Lopez, who went 8 of 17 on his way to 21 points. Lopez has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Nathan Muriithi, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 13 points.

Delta Charter's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-7. As for Vanguard College Prep, their win bumped their record up to 6-10.

Delta Charter came up short against Vanguard College Prep in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, falling 56-47. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Vanguard College Prep's Desmond Taylor, who went 9 of 19 on his way to 21 points and seven rebounds. Now that Delta Charter knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
