Basketball Recap: Fort Collins Skates Past Pomona with Ease

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Fort Collins). They blew past the Pomona Panthers, posting an 81-49 victory. This was payback for the Lambkins, who suffered a 61-59 loss the last time these two teams met.

Fort Collins got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Marcel Herrera out in front who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 15 boards. Those 15 boards gave Herrera a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Marcus Burkett, who went 6 of 8 on his way to 17 points.

Fort Collins was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive games.

When it comes to explaining why Pomona lost on Thursday, don't look at Dj Hawkins. Despite the final result, he went 6 of 14 en route to 22 points and five rebounds. Hawkins' evening made it seven games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaxon Perry, who posted 11 points.

Fort Collins' record now sits at 2-3. As for Pomona, this is the second loss in a row for them and also nudges their season record down to 2-3.

Fort Collins will take on Poudre at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Poudre has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games. As for Pomona, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Pomona Panthers take on the Niwot Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Pomona is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 65.2 points per game this season.
