Baseball Recap: Pomperaug Victorious

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Saturday as neither Pomperaug nor Plainville made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Panthers walked away with a 4-1 victory over the Blue Devils. This was payback for the Panthers, who suffered a 5-2 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Alex Augustine spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on six hits. He is becoming a predictor of Pomperaug's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 3-1 (and 3-8 when he doesn't).

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Andrew Brocksmith, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two doubles. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high. Brayden Cloutier was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

The win made it two in a row for Pomperaug and bumps their season record up to 6-9. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 1 runs in those games. As for Plainville, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-8 record this season.

Plainville will be playing in front of their home fans against Middletown at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Blue Devils are facing the Blue Dragons at the right time seeing as the Blue Dragons are stuck on a nine-game losing streak. Pomperaug will be paying especially close attention to Plainville's game: after Plainville faces off against Guilford, they'll take on Pomperaug again at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
