Baseball Recap: Newport Takes a Loss

Newport had lost 20 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 0-21 to make it 21. They came up short against the Calvary Christian Cougars, falling 12-2. The Wildcats were not able to make up for their defeat to the Cougars from their previous meeting back in May of 2024.

Newport saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ethan Koster, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double.

As for Calvary Christian, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-3 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by seven runs or more this season.

On Calvary Christian's side, Case Craddock made a splash no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over 4.1 innings pitched. Craddock has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Adam Curtis, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Finn Zachary was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newport will welcome Holy Cross at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The Indians will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Wildcats surely won't give up without a fight. As for Calvary Christian, they will be playing at home against Villa Madonna at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
