The Season: De La Salle vs. James Logan

The 10th installment of "The Season," an in-depth look at one of the nation's top high school football programs, De La Salle (Concord, Calif.), features its most dynamic player: Antoine Custer.

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound running back and defensive back is the second cousin of one of De La Salle's most famous alums, the late Terrance Kelly, who was featured prominently in the De La Salle book and football movie "When the Game Stands Tall."

Kelly, a bone-crushing running back and linebacker, was murdered two nights before he was to leave for the University of Oregon on a football scholarship in 2004.

Custer, who shows a box full of college offers, wears Kelly's uniform number 28.

"I've tried to follow in his footsteps," said Custer, who has rushed for 1,066 yards and 11 touchdowns this season — 4,156 and 49 for his career. He's also sixth on the team in tackles.

Shot, directed and narrated by Taylor Lambert of Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area, this episode follows Custer from breakfast at 5:45 a.m. to school to practice.

Also highlighted on this segment is the team's training staff led by Kent Mercer, the broken middle finger of four-star tackle Boss Tagaloa, linebacker coach Ned Milin, the play of inside linebacker Logan Nonies and a De La Salle fan who has sat in the same seat for 17 straight seasons.

She had advice for the Spartans before last week's game against James Logan (Union City): "It doesn't matter who you play, they are all out to get you."

Though Logan returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, the Spartans rolled to their eighth straight win, 57-14. Logan had negative-six yards by halftime.
