Raiders come from behind to pull out narrow victory.
Video: Highlights of Trevon Grimes, who came up big on Friday night.St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) narrowly avoided an upset, escaping with a 36-28 victory over
Hallandale (Fla.) on Friday night.
A late touchdown reception by
Trevon Grimes gave Aquinas a 29-28 lead with four minutes remaining.
A
Jaxson Kincaide score sealed the victory for the Raiders, who entered the game ranked No. 2 in the Xcellent 25 National Football Rankings presented by the Army National Guard.
Led by the fine play of quarterback
Tyler Huntley, a Utah commit, Hallandale led for much of the game and appeared poised to stun Aquinas and shake up both the state and national rankings.
Aquinas, however, simply managed to find a way to win. After Grimes' go-ahead touchdown, its talent-laden defense clamped down and forced a turnover on downs. When Hallandale got the ball back with enough time for one final shot to tie the game, Aquinas intercepted Huntley to end it.
Huntley was impressive in defeat, throwing for nearly 500 yards, according to Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald.
Aquinas remains unbeaten with the victory. The Raiders have games against Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderale and Blanche Ely before closing the regular season with a showdown against Flanagan.
Hallandale will look to rebound from its first loss of the season when it travels to take on Jackson next weekend.
