Baseball Recap: Lewis County Gets the Win

While Lewis County's victory against Bourbon County wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Lions narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Colonels 7-5.

Zane Smyke was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Lewis County is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-21 otherwise. Smyke was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three RBI and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Braxton Egbert, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2025. Another player making a difference was Braylon Puente, who went 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Lewis County has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-22 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Bourbon County, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 17-15.

Looking ahead, Lewis County will host East Carter at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Bourbon County, they are taking a road trip to take on Walton-Verona at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The Colonels' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bearcats have averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season.
