Softball Preview: Alexander Cougars vs. Rome Wolves
Alexander is 5-0 against Rome since August of 2020, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Alexander Cougars will square off against the Rome Wolves at 4:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Alexander has five straight wins, Rome has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Monday, Alexander was able to grind out a solid victory over Newnan, taking the game 9-5.
Kaylee Underwood made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over ten innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than seven innings in three consecutive pitching appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a double.
In other batting news, Lulu Berry was incredible, going 4-for-6 with a home run and two runs. The dominant performance gave her a new career- in hits. Another player making a difference was Kenzie Townsend, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of her six plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Rome came up short against Villa Rica on Thursday, falling 23-8.
Rome got a massive performance out of Kayla Stewart, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Reese Torimoto, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 3-for-3.
Alexander pushed their record up to 10-5 with that win, which was their third straight on the road. As for Rome, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-12.
Everything went Alexander's way against Rome in their previous matchup back in August as Alexander made off with a 16-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Alexander since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
