Softball Game Preview: East Providence Townies vs. Cumberland Clippers

East Providence and Cumberland are an even 5-5 against one another since June of 2017, but likely not for long. The Townies will venture away from home to square off against the Clippers at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. East Providence is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.

East Providence is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Ponaganset, who was ranked 17th at the time (East Providence was ranked 13th). The Townies skirted past the Chieftains 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Townies have posted since April 24, 2024.

Cassie Dulude spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, East Providence saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Emma Boisseau, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Marianna Pina also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.

Moses Brown hit Cumberland with a four-run third inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Clippers lost 9-1 to the Quakers. Clippers fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Quakers since on Thursday.

Cumberland's defeat was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 1-8. As for East Providence, they now have a winning record of 5-4.

East Providence suffered a grim 14-4 defeat to Cumberland when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Townies avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
