Basketball Recap: Athens Drive Picks Up Sixth Straight Win at Home

On Friday, the Athens Drive Jaguars didn't have too much breathing room in their game against the Weddington Warriors, but they still walked away with a 50-45 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Jaguars.

Athens Drive had a senior duo take command as Makenzie Kelly went 6 for 13 on her way to 17 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals and Kianna Gulley posted 15 points along with six boards and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Kelly has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Quincie Toran, who put up seven points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

Athens Drive smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in five consecutive matches.

Weddington's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Caroline Clark, who had 15 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Bailey Page, who posted 13 points and three steals.

Athens Drive's victory was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-4. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.0 points per game. As for Weddington, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-4.

Athens Drive will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Sanderson at 6:00 p.m. on January 10th. As for Weddington, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 58-47 loss against McDowell on the 30th.
