Football Game Preview: Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets vs. Lopez Lobos

The Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets will challenge the Lopez Lobos at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Edcouch-Elsa has three straight wins, Lopez has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

On Friday, Edcouch-Elsa earned a 27-17 victory over Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest.

On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Edcouch-Elsa's defense and their six sacks. Leading the way was Derek Cardenas with 4.5. Cardenas is crushing it when it comes to sacks: he's posted at least one every time he's taken the field this season. Edcouch-Elsa got some further help from Pedro Trevino Jr.: he picked up 1.5 sacks and made ten total tackles (2.0 for loss).

Meanwhile, Lopez was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Thursday as they fell 33-28 to Pace.

The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Ricardo Saucedo and Damian Majano. Majano had a solid game and rushed for 63 yards and one TD on only five carries. Meanwhile, Saucedo was balling out in the loss, rushing for 125 yards and one touchdown.

Lopez now has a losing record of 4-5. As for Edcouch-Elsa, they now have a winning record of 5-4.

Edcouch-Elsa beat Lopez 24-17 when the teams last played back in November of 2024. Will the Yellowjackets repeat their success, or do the Lobos have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
