Softball Recap: Valmeyer Takes a Loss

Valmeyer extended their losing streak to nine on Monday, dropping their season record down to 2-12 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at the hands of the Gibault Catholic Hawks. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Hawks this season, with their most recent defeat being a 14-2 loss back in April.

Madisyn Huddleston was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 14 batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off six hits. Those six hits allowed gave her a new career-low. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with five RBI and one triple.

In other batting news, Ally Coats and Avery Proffer did some serious damage despite the final result: Coats went 2-for-3 with two runs, while Proffer went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. Another player making a difference was Gabby Marquardt, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI.

As for Gibault Catholic, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-13. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since April 1, 2024.

On Gibault Catholic's side, they saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ashley Murphy, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that Murphy has launched this season. Chloe Lancaster was another, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one double and one RBI.

Valmeyer will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Sparta at 4:30 p.m. on the 29th. As for Gibault Catholic, they will be taking part in a tournament against Marissa/Coulterville at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Hawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Meteors have averaged an impressive 10 runs per game this season.
