Baseball Recap: Russell Comes Up Short

Russell entered their matchup against Raceland on Tuesday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The Red Devils fell just short of the Rams by a score of 11-9. The Red Devils' loss continues a trend for the squad, making it three in a row.

Hayden McGuire was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Kyle Mokas made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored three runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Russell's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 7-1 (and 3-5 when he doesn't). Elijah Hankins was another key player, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.

Russell suffered their first home defeat, dropping their record down to 10-6. As for Raceland, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Russell will venture away from home to challenge Lawrence County at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Raceland, they will head out to face off against Pikeville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Panthers will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Rams surely won't give up without a fight.
