Baseball Recap: Newport Comes Up Short

Newport fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against McCrory on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Jaguars by a score of 11-9. That's two games in a row now that the Greyhounds have lost by exactly two runs.

Luke Reynolds and Ryan Burgin stepped up to the plate in a big way. Reynolds went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one double, while Burgin went 4-for-5 with five RBI and one double. Newport is 2-1 when Reynolds posts three or more RBI, but 9-10-1 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Luke Sampson, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs.

Newport has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-11-1 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games. As for McCrory, their victory bumped their record up to 16-5.

As of now, neither Newport nor the Jaguars have any future games scheduled.
