Baseball Recap: Smithfield Gets the Win

Smithfield barely beat Westerly the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Sentinels never let the Bulldogs get on the board and left with an 8-0 victory on Tuesday. The Sentinels have beaten the Bulldogs the last seven times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Bulldogs has come to flipping the script.

Not much got past Brady McShane, who gave up just seven hits to keep Westerly off the board.

At the plate, Jacob Sylvester and Connor Curtis did most of the damage at the plate: Sylvester went 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple, while Curtis got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI. Those two runs gave Curtis a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Johnny Brown, who went 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Smithfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Westerly only posted an OBP of .345.

Smithfield's win bumped their record up to 8-6. As for Westerly, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-9.

Coming up, Smithfield will be playing in front of their home fans against South Kingstown at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Rebels' pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so the Sentinels' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Westerly, they will challenge Narragansett at 5:15 p.m. on Friday.
