Football Recap: Clovis East Comes Up Short Despite Brandon Cervantez's Big Defensive Game

Clovis East scored first but ultimately less than Clovis West in their matchup on Friday. They took a 28-21 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Golden Eagles. The Timberwolves were up 21-7 in the second quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.

Despite the loss, Clovis East still got an impressive performance from Jamie Spurgeon, who rushed for 89 yards and one TD on only 11 carries, and also threw for 119 yards and one touchdown.

Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 1.3 yards per carry. While two picked up at least 12 total tackles, Tristan Kircher stood above the rest. He picked up two sacks, made 12 total tackles (3.0 for loss), and defended one pass. Clovis East didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 5.7.

Clovis East's defense also made the game a nightmare for Jamar (JJ) Howard, racking up 7.5 sacks. Brandon Cervantez led the group effort, picking up 2.5 of those sacks all by himself. Thanks to that big game, Devin Woodard is now up to 6.5 sacks on the season. Clovis East got some further help from Caleb Slocum: he picked up a sack and made 12 total tackles (2.0 for loss).

A big part of Clovis West's win came down to the chemistry between Howard and his top target Relando Jefferson. Howard threw for 281 yards and four TDs while Jefferson picked up 128 receiving yards and one score.

Clovis East's record now sits at 4-2. As for Clovis West, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 5-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Clovis East will face off against Central East at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Timberwolves' defense better be ready for this one: the Bengals have averaged an impressive 41.5 points per game this season. As for Clovis West, they will square off against Buchanan at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
