AAAA Region 8 recap Nov. 7, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Walnut Grove, who took down 395th ranked Walnut Grove, 32-31.
Monroe Area extended the longest winning streak in AAAA Region 8 this week by beating Chestatee, 35-14. This was the team's ninth consecutive win.
Lanier's dynamic duo of Taylor Grant and Marty Sanders proved tough for Lumpkin County to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Grant threw for 231 yards and one touchdown and Sanders had 120 yards receiving. Onyx Berrios helped Lanier's passing attack out by catching three balls for 72 yards.
Chaz Thornton was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 41 carries, he ran for 161 yards as Stephens County bested the Indians. Teammate Dionte Mayfield added to the ground attack by rushing for 18 yards.
On the ground, the Indians' Thornton has rushed for 1393 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is T'omas Colbert. The Stephens County star has 33 catches for 1045 yards.
Lanier's Sanders is a few successful plays short of surpassing 1,000 yards receiving this season. He needs only 56 receiving yards against the Warriors to hit that benchmark. He has recorded 43 catches for 944 yards this year.
Going into this week's game against Walnut Grove, Lanier's Grant needs 19 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season. Accruing a total of 15 touchdowns this year, Grant has thrown for 1981 yards with 10 interceptions.
A big matchup in AAAA Region 8 this week will be when Eastside takes on Monroe Area. The Eagles are currently in fourth, while the Hurricanes are in first.
Monroe Area took down the War Eagles 35-14 last week, the largest margin of any game.
