Football Recap: Marianna Takes a Loss

Marianna extended their losing streak to five on Friday, dropping them down to 1-7. They had to suffer through a 42-8 loss at the hands of the Holmes County Blue Devils. The Bulldogs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 30-8.

Even if they lost, Marianna's defensive line still kept up the pressure with three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Brantley Basford, Trucker Johnson, and Dominic Garcia, who each picked up one sack apiece.

As for Holmes County, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 5-3. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 7.58 yards per carry in those games compared to only 2.77 in the others.

Holmes County's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Zarius Goodman, who rushed for 92 yards and one score, and also picked up 53 receiving yards and one touchdown. Those 92 rushing yards gave Goodman a new career-high. Another passer making a difference was Egan Segers, who threw for 164 yards and a pair of TDs.

Marianna and Holmes County could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings. Marianna will challenge Taylor County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (462 vs. 142). Meanwhile, Holmes County (ranked 351st) will meet Blountstown (ranked 100th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
