Baseball Recap: Classical Takes a Loss

Classical had lost 11 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 3-12 to make it 12. They fell just short of the North Smithfield Northmen by a score of 3-2. Having soared to a lofty 18 runs in the game before, the Purple couldn't push the score so high this time.

Joseph Payamps was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out nine batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off ten hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Allen Espinal was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI. He has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times he's played.

As for North Smithfield, the victory got them back to even at 8-8. The win continues a trend for them in their matchups with Classical: they've now won three in a row.

On North Smithfield's side, Tyler Albino was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 11 over 6.2 innings pitched. Albino has become a key player for North Smithfield: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least ten strikeouts, but 5-7 otherwise. Albino was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs.

Albino wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Wyatt Pullen, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI. Yandel Domen also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
