Softball Recap: Waupaca Triumphs

Waupaca took a ten-run defeat the last time they faced off against Iola-Scandinavia, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Comets skirted past the Thunderbirds 9-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Comets have posted since April 16th.

Hailey Rowe spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and seven unearned) runs on ten hits.

On the hitting side, Waupaca got a big performance out of AJ Koran, who went 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Those two runs gave Koran a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Addi Purkis, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Waupaca kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.2 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 8.8.

Waupaca's victory bumped their record up to 5-15. As for Iola-Scandinavia, their record now sits at 14-5.

Looking ahead, Waupaca will face off against Wild Rose at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Iola-Scandinavia, they will take on Marathon at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Red Raiders' pitching crew has only allowed 3.9 runs per game this season, so the Thunderbirds' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
