The Surry County Cougars will square off against the Tidewater Academy Warriors at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Surry County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.

Surry County took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They blew past Brunswick 16-3. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Whitney Griffin made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). Griffin was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.

In other batting news, Hailey Livesay and Adalynn Swanner did most of the damage at the plate: Livesay got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double, while Swanner got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs and two stolen bases. That double was Livesay's first of the season. Sofia Flores was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Meanwhile, Tidewater Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They lost 13-4 to Southampton Academy.

Surry County moved to 2-5 with that win, which also ended their three-game losing streak. As for Tidewater Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 1-9.
