Baseball Recap: Waverly Drops Highest Score of Season Against Gretna

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Waverly). They never let the Gretna Dragons get on the board and left with a 19-0 victory on Monday. The result was nothing new for the Vikings, who have now won eight contests by eight runs or more so far this season.

Bruin Sampson was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and one run.

In other pitching news, Brady Schieffer looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (three).

Back at the plate, Crew Verkamp was a standout: he went 1-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Carsen Malcolm, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs and one stolen base.

Waverly hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in four consecutive games.

Waverly has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.2 runs over those games. As for Gretna, their loss dropped their record down to 4-9.

Waverly didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 7-5 victory against Gretna East on the 15th. As for Gretna, they have also already played their next game, a 10-3 win against Standing Bear on the 15th.
