Flag Football Recap: Rory Murphy and Karstyn Richardson Secure Win for Mingus

Mingus won against Westview on Thursday with 14 points and they decided to stick to that point total again on Saturday. The Marauders came out on top against the Shadow Ridge Stallions by a score of 14-6. Given the Marauders' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona flag football rankings (they are ranked ninth, while the Stallions are ranked 40th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

A big part of Mingus' win came down to the chemistry between Rory Murphy and her top target Karstyn Richardson. Murphy threw for 195 yards and one TD while Richardson picked up 78 receiving yards and one touchdown. Richardson showed off some serious burst, connecting on a big catch for 50 yards.

Mingus' defense made their presence known, laying out Peyton Bills four times. Maddie Babcock was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up three sacks herself. Babcock is crushing it when it comes to sacks: she's posted at least one every time she's taken the field this season.

When it comes to explaining why Shadow Ridge lost, don't look at Bills. Despite the final result, she threw for 139 yards and one touchdown, and also rushed for 45 yards. Another player making a difference was Milayna Turner, who picked up 142 receiving yards.

The victory (which was Mingus' third in a row) raised their record to 7-1. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 4.3 points on average over those games. As for Shadow Ridge, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-6.

Looking ahead, Mingus will square off against Saguaro at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Shadow Ridge, they wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 19-7 victory against ALA - Ironwood on the 4th.
