League recap: San Gabriel stuns Montebello in upset

The biggest upset of the week belonged to San Gabriel, who took down 442nd ranked Montebello, 7-0. Marqus Valenzuela threw for 436 yards and four touchdowns and ran for eight yards in the win.

Bell Gardens moved up to 501 from 551 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Almont. The Lancers were able to make the jump by topping Schurr 27-24.

Marcus Portillo was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 28 carries, he ran for 140 yards as the Oilers beat the Oilers. Jordan Fowlkes also contributed to the rushing game with 37 yards on the ground.

Mayorga was the best wideout in the league this week as San Gabriel defeated Montebello. Mayorga tallied six receptions for 165 yards. Gabriel Larios helped San Gabriel's passing attack out by catching four balls for 150 yards.

San Gabriel's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Matadors feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Valenzuela has thrown for 1970 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, while Mayorga has 26 catches for 632 yards. Mayorga leads the league in rushing with 618 yards.

The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Bell Gardens takes on second place Montebello. Bell Gardens beat the Spartans last week, while Pete Gonzalez's team fell to Jude Oliva's team.

Going into this week's game against Keppel, the Matadors' Valenzuela needs 30 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season.

Dave Ramos' team and Schurr played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Dave Ramos' team eventually emerging with a 27-24 victory.
