The Sandia Matadors will be taking part in a tournament against the Kirtland Central Broncos at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sandia is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
Sandia is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Rio Rancho, who was ranked 12th at the time (Sandia was ranked 22nd). Sandia lost 9-2 to Rio Rancho on Saturday. The defeat continues a trend for the Matadors in their meetings with the Rams: they've now lost three in a row.
Sandia saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Faith Wersonick, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Kirtland Central). They never let Newcomb get on the board and left with a 20-0 victory on Tuesday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Broncos needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.
Caylin Belin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-2.
In other batting news, Kirtland Central got a massive performance out of Tamirra Chee, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and four RBI. Those four RBI gave Chee a new career-high. Easton Myhers was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing four bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Kirtland Central always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .818. They are 5-2 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Kirtland Central's win bumped their record up to 5-6. As for Sandia, their loss dropped their record down to 5-5.
Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Sandia has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .437. However, it's not like Kirtland Central struggles in that department as they've averaged .572. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
