The Kennedy Cougars are taking a road trip to face off against the Monterey Trail Mustangs at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (Kennedy: 4, Monterey Trail: 3.6) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Kennedy barely beat Rio Americano the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Kennedy blew past Rio Americano 13-3 on Monday. Winning may never get old, but the Cougars sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Kaylena Ogle made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
In other batting news, Kennedy let Kira Griffin and Malaiyah Fujinaga?starks run wild. Griffin scored three runs and stole Three bases. while going 2-for-3, while Fujinaga?starks scored two runs and stole Five bases. while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs Griffin has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was London Deguchy, who scored two runs and stole Three bases. while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Kennedy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Monday Monterey Trail sidestepped McClatchy for a 4-2 victory. The Mustangs haven't had any issues with the Lions recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Maya Ewing was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Ewing was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Liliana Ruelas, who scored two runs and stole Two bases.
Kennedy now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Monterey Trail, their record is now 2-3.
Kennedy's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's game. Kennedy has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.9 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Monterey Trail, though, as they've been averaging only 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Kennedy continue to outrun the ball?
Kennedy couldn't quite finish off Monterey Trail in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 and fell 4-2. Can Kennedy avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
