Softball Recap: Utica Chieftains vs. Romeo Bulldogs
Utica had lost three straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped down to 7-9 to make it four. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Romeo Bulldogs. If the Chieftains were looking for revenge after losing 10-2 to the Bulldogs when the teams met back in May of 2025, then they'll just have to keep looking.
Utica saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Samantha Nikolovski, who went 1-for-3 with one double.
As for Romeo, the win was the tenth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 15-2. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games.
On Romeo's side, Phoebe Maximiuk spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits. Maximiuk has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Helena Murphy, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in May of 2025. Savannah Tocco also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Coincidentally, Utica and Romeo will both be playing Anchor Bay the next time they take the field. The Chieftains will host the Tars at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, while the Bulldogs will head out to face them at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
