Basketball Recap: Matthew Smith's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Burkeville over Leggett

Burkeville lost against Leggett back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Burkeville Mustangs fell just short of the Leggett Pirates by a score of 53-50. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Mustangs have suffered against the Pirates since January 4, 2022.

Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Matthew Smith, who posted 16 points and eight rebounds. Those eight boards gave Smith a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kalep Adams, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds.

Even though they lost, Burkeville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 26 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

With the loss, Burkeville broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 5-11. As for Leggett, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 8-14 record this season.

Burkeville has already played their next contest (against Hull-Daisetta), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Leggett didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 95-28 defeat against Brookeland on the 17th.
