Softball Recap: Freedom Comes Up Short

Freedom fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Briar Woods on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Falcons by a score of 2-1. The Eagles were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Falcons earlier this season, when they won 3-2.

Riley Picinich spent all 7.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on three hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Freedom saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jezlynn Abreu, who went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

Freedom has also traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-11 record this season. As for Briar Woods, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-10 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Freedom will welcome Loudoun Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vikings have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.38 runs per game on average), something the Eagles will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Briar Woods, they will be playing at home against John Champe at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
