Baseball Recap: Otay Ranch Find Success

Otay Ranch had lost three straight, but after bumping their record up to 17-10 on Tuesday that streak is in the rearview. They had just enough and edged out the San Ysidro Cougars 3-1. That's the third time they've managed to beat them this season, with their most recent win being a 6-2 victory two weeks ago.

Itzak Mariscal got the start for Otay Ranch and what a start it was: he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over six innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave Mariscal a new career-high.

At the plate, Otay Ranch saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Carlos Martinez, who got on base in four of his six plate appearances with one RBI.

As for San Ysidro, their defeat was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 7-19. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 15-5 Bonita Vista and 17-6 Eastlake (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 70.4% over those games).

On San Ysidro's side, Carlos Orozco put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. That's the fewest earned runs Orozco has allowed since back in April. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one home run.

In other pitching news, San Ysidro got a good showing from Jacob Benavides, who pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the first time Benavides hasn't allowed a single earned run since back in March.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Otay Ranch will welcome Bonita Vista at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for San Ysidro, they will host Eastlake at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Titans have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season.
