Tigers are favored to repeat as Class 6 state champions behind key returners Sherrod Covil, Ethan Vasko.

The 2021 high school football season in Virginia kicks off next week and MaxPreps has your look at the state's top teams. After winning their first state title since 2011 last spring, Oscar Smith is back to claim the top spot in our preseason rankings.

The Tigers, who debut at No. 36 in MaxPreps Preseason Top 100 this season, outscored opponents 464-44 and recorded five shutouts en route to a 62-21 victory over South County (Lorton) in the VHSL Class 6 state championship game.

Oscar Smith is led by 6-foot-4, 210-pound dual-threat quarterback Ethan Vasko. The Old Dominion pledge was named All-Tidewater Player of the Year after accounting for 2,230 total yards and 34 touchdowns with no interceptions in nine games. The nation's No. 11 safety prospect, Sherrod Covil (Clemson commit) returns to anchor a defense that allowed just 4.9 points per contest last season.

Additional defending state champions include Stone Bridge (Class 5), Salem (Class 4), Lafayette (Class 3), Appomattox County (Class 2) and Riverheads (Class 1).
