Softball Recap: Baker Victorious

Baker proved they can win big last Thursday (they won by ten) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Central Jaguars 8-7. This was a revenge game for the Gators: when they faced off against the Jaguars last Tuesday, they had to take a 5-0 defeat.

Abigail Griffin and Emily Whiddon were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Griffin tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and six unearned) runs off six hits. Meanwhile, Whiddon tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. At bat, Griffin went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Whiddon scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave Whiddon a new career-high in hits (three).

They weren't the only ones making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Abby Norman, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February.

Baker's win bumped their record up to 8-5. As for Central, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-7.

Looking ahead, Baker will head out to take on Milton at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Central, they will take on Escambia at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Jaguars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Gators have averaged an impressive 11.2 runs per game this season.
