Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Caden Johnson and Jayven Welch Lead Southaven to Victory

On Monday, the Southaven Chargers earned a 60-50 victory over the New Albany Bulldogs. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Chargers.

Southaven was led to victory by Jayven Welch and Caden Johnson. Welch went 8 of 14 on his way to 19 points and seven boards, while Johnson went 7 of 12 on his way to 16 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance gave Welch a new career-high in rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Cameron Hammond, who posted three points and three steals.

Southaven was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as New Albany only posted four assists.

Several Bulldogs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Amari Hubbard, who put up 12 points and six rebounds. Hubbard is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Decorion Hardin, who had 13 points.

Southaven's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 8-7. As for New Albany, with the loss, they broke their seven-game winning streak and moved their record to 9-4.

Southaven will head out to square off against Lewisburg at 7:30 p.m. on January 7th. Southaven is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.6 points per game this season. As for New Albany, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, an 88-55 victory against Myrtle on the 2nd.
