Basketball Game Preview: Newman Greenies vs. Metairie Park Country Day Cajuns

Newman and Metairie Park Country Day are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2018, but not for long. Having just played yesterday, the Newman Greenies will jump right back in to play the Metairie Park Country Day Cajuns at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Newman sitting on eight straight victories and Metairie Park Country Day on three.

On Thursday, Newman beat King Charter 65-53. Given the Greenies' advantage in MaxPreps' Louisiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 43rd, while the Jaguar are ranked 182nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Newman's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Randy Livingston Jr, who went 6-for-12 en route to 16 points in addition to eight assists and eight rebounds. Livingston Jr's evening made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Cj Encarlade, who went 5-for-10 to rack up 16 points.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Metairie Park Country Day). They blew past De La Salle 83-52 on Monday. The Cajuns have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine games by 21 points or more this season.

Newman's victory bumped their record up to 20-5. As for Metairie Park Country Day, they pushed their record up to 22-8 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home.

Everything went Newman's way against Metairie Park Country Day when the teams last played back in March of 2024, as Newman made off with a 46-25 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Newman since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
