Basketball Recap: Mason Cooper's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Vermilion over Clyde

Vermilion was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took an 81-63 bruising from the Clyde Fliers. If the Sailors were looking for revenge after losing 63-53 to them when the teams met back in December of 2023, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Vermilion's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mason Cooper, who posted 11 points and three steals. The dominant performance also gave Cooper a new career-high in three-point shooting accuracy (67%). Brock Meyers was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

It was another big night for Brayden Olson, who went 9-for-13 to rack up 24 points and three steals for Clyde. Olson's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was Brennan Wilson, who went 6-for-14 en route to 18 points and six boards.

Vermilion's loss dropped their record down to 6-14. As for Clyde, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-9 record this season.

Vermilion and Clyde could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. Vermilion will face off against Huron at 7:00 p.m. on Friday down 358 places (659 vs. 301). Similarly, Clyde (ranked 306th) will meet Sandusky (ranked 88th) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
