Canyon Springs hasn't had much luck against Moreno Valley recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Cougars will take on the Vikings at 7:00 p.m. Canyon Springs' defense has only allowed 13.8 points per game this season, so Moreno Valley's offense will have their work cut out for them.
Canyon Springs is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 50 points last Friday, they were much more limited against Perris on Friday. They came up short against the Panthers, falling 33-7. The matchup marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
The losing side was boosted by Angel Robles, who rushed for 129 yards and one score while picking up 8.1 yards per carry.
Meanwhile, Moreno Valley came tearing into Thursday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.7 points), and they left with even more momentum. They claimed a resounding 43-7 victory over the Lancers. The Vikings pushed the score to 28-7 by the end of the third, a deficit the Lancers had little chance of recovering from.
Moreno Valley's win came from a few key players Canyon Springs will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Trevon Williams, who rushed for 193 yards and three TDs while picking up 8.0 yards per carry. That's the most rushing touchdowns he has posted since back in September of 2024. Another signal caller making a difference was Syree Matthews, who threw for 161 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 15 passes.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Moreno Valley was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 304 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 180 rushing yards in six consecutive matchups.
Moreno Valley's defense made their presence known, laying out Robert Arellano six times. Andrew Delatorre was especially locked on to Lakeside's QB and sacked him three times. Delatorre has been hot, having also posted five or more total tackles the last five times he's played.
Moreno Valley's record now sits at 8-1. As for Canyon Springs, their loss dropped their record down to 7-2.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Canyon Springs has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 234.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Moreno Valley struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 231.2 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Canyon Springs couldn't quite get it done against Moreno Valley in their previous matchup back in November of 2024 as they fell 41-28. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
