Baseball Recap: Grafton Triumphs

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Grafton ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-8 win over the Preston Knights. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Bearcats have posted since April 18th.

The team relied heavily on Carter Gillespie, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and two doubles. He is becoming a predictor of Grafton's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 3-1 (and 10-12 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Chace Kinsey, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Grafton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

The win got Grafton back to even at 13-13. As for Preston, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 8-7 record.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Grafton will venture away from home to take on St. Marys at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Blue Devils will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last. As for Preston, they will head out on the road to challenge Lincoln at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Cougars will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Knights surely won't give up without a fight.
