Basketball Recap: New Castle Trojans vs. Greenfield-Central Cougars
New Castle was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They had to suffer through a 65-30 loss at the hands of the Greenfield-Central Cougars. While losing is never fun, the Trojans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 255th, while the Cougars are ranked 58th).
New Castle lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Alana Orr, who posted nine points and five rebounds. Shelly Beck also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steals of the season.
Even though they lost, New Castle smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. This was only their ninth loss (out of 12 games) when they hit their own glass that hard.
Greenfield-Central had a senior duo take command as Madison Sonsini dropped a double-double on 24 points and ten boards and Chaney Brown went 10 of 14 en route to 20 points and eight rebounds. The contest was Sonsini's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Brooklyn Mcconnell, who scored nine points and three steals.
New Castle's defeat dropped their record down to 4-13. As for Greenfield-Central, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. New Castle will host Tri at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Tri is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54 points per game this season. As for Greenfield-Central, a feisty cat fight is on tap when the Greenfield-Central Cougars duke it out with the Muncie Central Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Greenfield-Central has three straight victories, Muncie Central has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the court.
