Softball Recap: Cesar Chavez Champions vs. Apollo Hawks
Cesar Chavez extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 3-15 in the process. They came up short against the Apollo Hawks, falling 14-4. The Champions were not able to make up for their defeat to the Hawks from their previous meeting back in February of 2015.
Cesar Chavez saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jade Garcia, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Another was Gianna Jaquez, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
As for Apollo, their win ended an 18-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 4-14. The high-scoring effort was just what they needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.
On Apollo's side, Kianna Diets-Doyle made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing six innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. What's more, Diets-Doyle posted four strikeouts, the most she's had since back in February. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Whitney Chrisman was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Natalia Hernandez Alatorre also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cesar Chavez will face off against Camelback at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 17.12 runs per game on average), something the Champions will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Apollo, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Desert Ridge at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
