Baseball Recap: Maryvale Starts off Right with Win over Westview

Maryvale took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Wednesday. They were the clear victor by a 13-6 margin over the Westview Knights. The Panthers have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Knights, too.

Sebastian Gonzalez made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Gonzalez was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 3-for-5.

In other batting news, Axel Aguilar was a standout: he scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Nathan Benavides, who scored a run while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

Maryvale kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in March of 2024.

Looking ahead, Maryvale will challenge North at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Westview, they will be taking part in a tournament against Camelback at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. Westview is coming into the contest on a 23-game losing streak dating back to last season.
