Softball Recap: Edgewood Cougars vs. Valley View Spartans
Edgewood was the 6-5 winner over Valley View when they last played one another on April 8th, but their luck changed this time around. The Cougars fell just short of the Spartans by a score of 9-8 on Monday.
Leigha Combs was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and six unearned) runs off 12 hits (and only one walk). Combs was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Edgewood got a big performance out of Evie Short, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Short also brought in an RBI, marking her first of the season. Sam Verhoff was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.
Edgewood has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season. As for Valley View, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-10-1.
Coming up, Edgewood will challenge Ross at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Rams' pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so the Cougars' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Valley View, they will square off against Bishop Fenwick at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
