Softball Recap: Highland Springs Gets the Win

Highland Springs's game on Monday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-9 victory over the Varina Blue Devils. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Springers as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Elise Fleming made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up six earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. Fleming was even better at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

In other batting news, Samantha Gathright was incredible, going 3-for-5 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. She continues to improve, besting her previous run total in each of the last three games she's played. Dejhonae Sangster was another key player, going 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Highland Springs was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Highland Springs' victory bumped their record up to 6-4. As for Varina, their loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-6.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Highland Springs will host Atlee at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Raiders' pitching crew has only allowed 2.6 runs per game this season, so the Springers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Varina, they will welcome Patrick Henry at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Patriots will roll in looking for their eighth straight win, something the Blue Devils surely won't give up without a fight.
