Baseball Recap: Columbia Takes a Loss

Columbia made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Averill Park, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Blue Devils fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 11-9 on Wednesday. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Blue Devils, who until this matchup were averaging 3.67 runs allowed.

Braydon Griffin made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Columbia is 3-1 when Griffin posts two or more runs, but 6-8 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Ascher Melino, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Columbia has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-9 record this season. As for Averill Park, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 15-4.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Columbia will take on Saratoga Springs at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Blue Devils' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Blue Streaks have averaged an impressive 9.7 runs per game this season. As for Averill Park, they will challenge Guilderland at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. The last six games the Flyin Dutchman have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
