Baseball Game Preview: Homestead Mustangs vs. Bellarmine College Prep Bells

Homestead hasn't had much luck against Bellarmine College Prep recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. Homestead is taking a road trip to face off against Bellarmine College Prep at 11:00 a.m. Homestead will be strutting in after a win while Bellarmine College Prep will be coming in after a loss.

Homestead barely beat Pioneer the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Homestead was the clear victor by a 13-5 margin over Pioneer on Thursday. That eight run margin sets a new team best for Homestead this season.

Jayden Duong and Clay Bussey made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Duong struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off ten hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Bussey tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. At the plate, Duong scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-3, while Bussey went 1-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. Duong is becoming a predictor of Homestead's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 2-3 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Drew Hamburger, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Andrew Sun was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.

Meanwhile, Bellarmine College Prep fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Junipero Serra on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Padres by a score of 2-1. The Bells haven't had much luck with the Padres recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

The victory snapped Homestead's losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 4-4 record. As for Bellarmine College Prep, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.

Homestead might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Bellarmine College Prep in their previous meeting back in April of 2022. Can Homestead avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
