Baseball Recap: Lawrence County Extends Winning Streak to Three

It was a proper cat-fight when Lawrence County duked it out with Silliman Institute on Friday. The Cougars came out on top against the Wildcats by a score of 4-1. This was a revenge game for the Cougars: when they faced off against the Wildcats back in February, they had to take a 10-4 defeat.

Jake Turner was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out ten over seven innings pitched. Those ten strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on JaKobe Haynes, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2025. Maddox Whittington also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

The victory (which was Lawrence County's third in a row) raised their record to 6-5-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Silliman Institute, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 7-1.

Looking ahead, Lawrence County will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Brookhaven at 1:00 p.m. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 7.8 runs per game this season. As for Silliman Institute, they will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Copiah Academy at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st.
