Baseball Recap: Newman Central Catholic Snaps Four-Game Streak of Wins on the Road

Newman Central Catholic dropped their record down to 22-4-1 on Saturday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins on the road. They lost 18-2 to the Bishop McNamara Fightin' Irish. The Comets were red-hot at the plate heading into the game (they scored no less than ten runs in the three matchups prior), but the Fightin' Irish's pitchers proved too tough.

Ashton Miner was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season.

As for Bishop McNamara, they are on a roll lately: they've won 13 of their last 15 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games.

On Bishop McNamara's side, Preston Payne made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Payne was also big at the plate, earning two RBI, one run, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Taylor Fuerst, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jacob Lotz, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newman Central Catholic will take on Amboy at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Bishop McNamara, they will challenge Harvest Christian Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Fightin' Irish's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Lions have averaged an impressive 6.6 runs per game this season.
