Baseball Recap: Iona Prep's Victory on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Seven

Iona Prep waltzed into their game on Friday with six straight wins... but they left with seven. Everything went their way against the Cardinal Spellman Pilots as they made off with a 15-5 win. The Gaels have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Pilots, too.

Michael Colon looked comfortable as he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one hit in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Devin Diaz, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and one triple. What's more, he posted three hits, the most he's had since back in March. Another player making a difference was Luke Tran, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.

Iona Prep was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .353 or higher in four consecutive contests.

Iona Prep pushed their record up to 14-3-1 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.4 runs over those games. As for Cardinal Spellman, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-4 record this season.

Iona Prep and Cardinal Spellman should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps New York Rankings. The Gaels will face off against Xavier at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank advantage (33 vs. 121). The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Iona Prep 2.5, the Knights 3.5) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Cardinal Spellman (ranked 126th) will meet Monsignor Scanlan (ranked 390th) at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
