Baseball Game Preview: St. Augustine Yellow Jackets vs. Matanzas Pirates

St. Augustine has gone 8-2 against Matanzas recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. St. Augustine will be playing in front of their home fans against Matanzas at 7:00 p.m. Neither St. Augustine nor Matanzas posted many runs in their last games, so it might be the pitching crews that decide this one.

Having struggled with six defeats in a row, St. Augustine turned things around against Fernandina Beach on Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Pirates a 1-0 shutout. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Yellow Jackets have posted since March 6th.

Not much got past Xavier Ahr, who gave up just three hits to keep Fernandina Beach off the board. Ahr also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because St. Augustine is 4-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-9 otherwise.

At the plate, Jordan Petty was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one double. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

Meanwhile, Matanzas was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their eighth straight loss. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-2 heartbreaker at the hands of Seabreeze.

Matanzas saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nick Pandich, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.

Matanzas' defeat dropped their record down to 1-17. As for St. Augustine, their win bumped their record up to 8-11.

St. Augustine beat Matanzas 6-1 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Does St. Augustine have another victory up their sleeve, or will Matanzas turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
