Baseball Recap: Gateway's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Monday

After flying high against Oasis last Friday, Gateway came back down to earth. The Gateway Eagles fell just short of the Cape Coral Seahawks by a score of 6-5 on Monday. The Eagles' loss signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.

Otniel Diaz was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. What's more, he gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-2.

Diaz wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Antony Leiderman, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Another was Sean Collins, who scored a run while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

Gateway's defeat dropped their record down to 8-4. As for Cape Coral, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-7.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gateway will face off against Lehigh at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Lehigh has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.36 runs per game on average), something Gateway will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Cape Coral, they will take on Gateway Charter at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cape Coral is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
