Basketball Game Preview: South Portland Red Riots vs. Cheverus Stags

The South Portland Red Riots will challenge the Cheverus Stags at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with South Portland sitting on four straight victories and Cheverus on three.

South Portland is headed into the matchup after thoroughly thrashing Massabesic: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that South Portland blew Massabesic out of the water with a 55-18 final score. The Red Riots have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine contests by 22 points or more this season.

Meanwhile, Cheverus strolled past Scarborough with points to spare on Tuesday, taking the game 56-42. Given the Stags' advantage in MaxPreps' Maine basketball rankings (they are ranked 18th, while the Red Storm are ranked 60th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

South Portland has also been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 29.5 points per game. As for Cheverus, they pushed their record up to 12-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.
